After breast reconstruction, restorative areola and nipple tattooing are considered the last step in a long journey. Breast reconstruction may or may not include nipple reconstruction.
Either way, there is no colour defining the area. Medical tattoo techniques can create a 3D nipple tattoo for those opting out of the nipple surgery. The goal of the 3D nipple is the illusion of protrusion.
Women who have fought through mastectomies, breast surgery or who have faded or irregular areolas can often feel less than completely feminine. Men too can feel self-conscious in the pool or on the beach if their areolas aren’t quite ‘normal’.
It’s not something we often talk about to our friends, but feeling uncomfortable in our bodies can affect every area of our lives.
Thankfully, you don’t have to suffer in silence anymore. Thanks to a revolutionary new medical tattooing procedure, you can get the areolas you always wanted, repairing the damage, fading and replacing missing skin.
If you’re unhappy with the way your areola looks, or for any reason do not have an areola any more, we can help. We work with:
Over the next 14 to 21 days your tattooed area will go through
three stages of healing:
1. Heal: The body’s natural defences will create fine scabs to protect the area whilst healing.
2. Peel: After a few days, when the tattooed area is healed, the scabs will fall off.
Do Not Pick off the scabs from the treated area as this will result in pigment loss.
3. Fade: Once the scabs have finally healed and fallen off the tattooed area, you will see a lighter shade of the implanted colour. After 4/6 weeks the pigment in the tattoo will have settled and this will be the colour of your nipple and areola.
You may decide to have further medical tattooing to add more colour and this will be discussed at your follow up appointment.
Skin colouring or vitiligo camouflage treatment is a semi-permanent makeup procedure that lasts up to 3 years on the skin without washing off. It is effective, safe and can cover vitiligo on the face, hands, and body.
Micro-pigmentation involves implanting small particles of natural pigment under the skin similar to a tattoo.
This treatment will help blend the colour of vitiligo to more closely match that of the surrounding skin. Breaks up the texture of the vitiligo skin by softening and flattening it.
Typically, two to four treatments are necessary. Topical anaesthetics are applied to keep the client comfortable during the procedure. Pigments are individually mixed to match the patient’s skin. Results can be seen immediately, though full end results are not apparent for about three weeks.
What to expect after the procedure
Improving one’s appearance and body image can significantly impact self-confidence. For individuals with skin colour loss, or de-pigmentation, medical corrective tattooing can help. De-pigmentation may occur for a variety of reasons.
Medical procedures, trauma, burns, congenital anomalies, and skin diseases can all lead to pigmentation irregularities.
While many scars and skin abnormalities can be improved with medical treatments and surgery, skin colour may still need to be addressed to recreate a “normal” appearance.
Skin camouflage and scar camouflage refer to the process of medical tattooing the skin using different shades of flesh tone pigments with the goal of disguising a scar or pigment irregularity.
The scar must be healed: Scars should be healed, at least 9 to 12 months old, with stable colour and no still be healing and the premature medical tattoo may lead to additional skin damage. An experienced, reputable medical tattooist will not work on scar tissue prematurely.
Smooth, flat appearance. Issues with skin texture generally cannot be addressed with camouflage tattooing. For this reason, bumpy or raised scars may not be appropriate for treatment. The best scars for treatment are smooth and relatively flat.
Free of dark edges. Scars with dark edges or borders may be indicative of post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation (PIHP) resulting from trauma or surgery. Increased hyperpigmentation and wider, darker borders may result from the camouflage tattooing process, though this tends to be more common among those with darker skin tones.
Candidates for medical camouflage tattoo must have realistic expectations and understand that treatment cannot completely restore the skin to its pre-injured state or fully erase the scar or abnormality.
The goal of camouflage tattooing is to improve upon colour differences to help disguise the imperfection. Patients who spend time tanning may not be satisfied with their result as the tattooed skin will not darken like the surrounding skin when exposed to sunlight or tanning booths.
The results of camouflage tattooing take time and may require more than one session.
